The Houston Police Department dive team rescued at least one person after someone drove over a guardrail and landed in a Houston bayou early Monday afternoon.
A 16-year-old Milby High School student died Monday after a vehicle drove over a guardrail and into a Houston bayou, police said.
The Houston Police Department dive team rescued at least one person after the 1:05 p.m. crash at 100 Broadway in East Houston.
Police said the female driver was driving at a high speed.
Underneath the bridge near Brays Greenway Park, teenage girls embraced, eyes red and wet with tears, after seeing police remove the body of the girl from the black sedan that was pulled out of the water a few hours after the crash.
Among the mourning teens was Debra Maldonado’s daughter, a sophomore at Milby High School, who told her mother it was her good friend who died in the crash.
Maldonado said she believed there were three teens in the car, all sophomores at Milby, although neither Houston police nor the Houston Independent School District has confirmed the identities of the driver and passengers.
Maldonado said her daughter received a happy birthday call from the now deceased teenager Sunday and was supposed to get a gift from her Monday.
“To see her standing there right now. It’s hard,” said Maldonado. “She’s never really lost friends like that before. She’s never really lost anybody like that, close to her.”
In a message to parents Monday, Milby Principal Ruth Pena said counselors would be available for students and staff.
"This is a terribly difficult time for our school community," Pena's statement said. "As such, counselors will be available on campus to provide support to students and staff and answer any questions they might have. They will remain available for as long as they are needed."
Tuesday is the last day of school for the HISD.
KHOU-TV reported that a teenage boy, who was also in the car and escaped safely, spoke to investigators about the incident.
