The final piece of track has been laid for the Sydney Metro City & Southwest line.

This marks a major milestone in Australia’s largest public transport project.

The construction work to extend the Sydney Metro tracks through the 15.5-kilometre tunnels between Chatswood and Sydenham took 18 months and more than 500 workers to complete.

Throughout the project, more than 40,000 cubic metres of concrete was used to embed approximately 45,000 sleepers, which are supporting 62 kilometres of Australian steel rails.

Now that track laying is complete, the construction workers are using railway wagons with large cable drums to roll out hundreds of kilometres of high voltage power cables that will energise the driverless metro trains.

Connection of the new Sydney Metro City & Southwest line with the existing Metro North West line is scheduled for later this year. Train testing will then start in 2023 ahead of passenger services in 2024.

This major project will provide metro services below Sydney Harbour and under the Sydney CBD for the first time.
