Steps away from California’s Venice Beach, an architecturally impressive home comprising two angular steel towers linked together by an upper-level bridge has come to the market for $5.8 million.
The contemporary, geometric property was the first U.S. project by Viennese architects, Coop Himmelb(l)au, who, for the 2001 build, “explored functional constraints to construct a complex sculptural form interwoven with an apparatus for living,” according to a news release from listing agency Engel & Völkers Santa Monica, which brought the home to the market earlier this month.

Spanning 2,522 square feet, the unique style of the open-plan, three-story home, known as Tectonic House, continues inside, where sculptural spaces use concrete, glass and structural steel combined with wood ceilings and natural light.
“What strikes me as I spend more time at Tectonic House is the synergy between the spaces throughout the residence,” said listing agent Sandra Miller of Engel & Völkers Santa Monica. “Each room feels separate and distinct, almost as if it combines aspects of different homes, but the house itself flows together through this unique collaborative architecture.”
“Being in Venice, not far from the beach, the residence connects seamlessly with the surrounding outdoors through its natural breeze and large windows where natural light pours in at every angle,” she added.
Additional architectural pedigree within the home comes in the form of a plywood art installation which starts on the floor and waves up the walls. The piece was installed by the home’s owners, Emmy award-winning screenwriter for “The Simpsons” J. Stewart Burns, and fellow screenwriter Lillian Yu, according to Engel & Völkers Santa Monica.
Mr. Burns acquired the property in 2014 for $2.3 million, records with PropertyShark show.
The pair could not be reached for comment.
