BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The Browns lost their new man in the middle.
Starting center Nick Harris was officially placed on injured reserve Tuesday and will miss the season with a knee injury suffered on the second snap of Cleveland's exhibition opener last week in Jacksonville.
Harris, who was slotted to replace JC Tretter after the Browns released the reliable veteran center after five seasons, got hurt while dropping back to protect quarterback Deshaun Watson when his knee gave out and he crumpled to the grass.
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski did not provide any specifics on Harris’ injury, and the team has not disclosed whether he’s undergone surgery. Harris was seeking a second opinion before opting for an operation.
“I've spoken to him every day,” Stefanski said before Tuesday's workout, the final training camp practice in front of fans. "It's hard when you are hurt. It's no fun. It's terrible. Everybody hates it. He's a positive person. He will get through this, and we will help him get through it.”
Harris' injury is the second significant one for the Browns in training camp. Last week, return specialist Jakeem Grant Sr. tore an Achilles tendon during practice and will miss the season. Cleveland signed the Pro Bowler in the offseason to jumpstart its dismal return game.
A fifth-round pick in 2020, Harris had bulked up during the offseason and was on track to replace Tretter, who remains a free agent. The Browns like Harris' mobility and viewed him as a younger upgrade for one of the league's best offensive lines.
With Harris out, the Browns have moved Ethan Pocic, signed as a free agent in March, into the starting lineup. Hjalte Froholdt, Michael Dunn and Brock Hoffman have gotten reps at center, but the Browns could still look outside the roster for help at the vital position.
Cleveland's interior depth took another hit Monday when rookie Dawson Deaton, a seventh-round pick from Texas Tech, tore his anterior cruciate ligament early in practice. Stefanski did not say how Deaton got injured.
Rookie kicker Cade York put on another show in practice, making 6 of 6 field goals, including a 54-yarder that might have been good from 70.
The fourth-round pick from LSU has only missed two kicks the entire camp. On Tuesday, local writers voted him the Maurice Bassett Award winner, an honor given to the team’s top rookie in camp. Bassett played for the Browns in the 1950s.
“He works hard at his craft,” Stefanski said. “That's really the big part for me with all these rookies, but Cade in particular was working hard every single day. There are days he does not kick where he's working on his body or he's watching the tape and those type of things.”
All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett missed his third straight practice after being excused to handle a personal matter.
The Browns are off Wednesday. It's not known if Garrett will be back for practices against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday and Friday. The teams will play at FirstEnergy Stadium on Sunday.
NOTES: Starting RT Jack Conklin took part in some team drills for the first time since he tore his patellar in November and underwent season-ending surgery. Conklin had been limited to individual work in camp. ... WR Anthony Schwartz hauled in a long TD pass from Jacoby Brissett during two-minute drills. Schwartz is looking to bounce back after dropping two passes from Watson against the Jaguars. ... Rookie DE Isaiah Thomas is expected to miss several days with a hand injury suffered Monday. Thomas has a cast on his right arm. ... CB Greg Newsome II (hamstring), DE Chase Winovich (hamstring) and WR Michael Woods II (hamstring) also sat out.

Police in Las Vegas say former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch was asleep and smelled of alcohol when he was found in his damaged sports car this week and arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Lynch’s attorneys responded Thursday with a statement saying Lynch was in a parked car, not driving, and a DUI charge won't stick. The arresting officer says police found markings suggesting Lynch’s black Shelby GT500 hit sidewalks before stopping in an industrial part of downtown Las Vegas. The 7:30 a.m. Tuesday arrest came after the Seattle Seahawks announced Monday that Lynch had been hired as a team broadcast special correspondent. In 12 NFL seasons, Lynch also played for the Buffalo Bills and Oakland Raiders.
Last season, 30 major college football programs made coaching changes. They included Southern California, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and LSU. Will this season be quieter? Not necessarily. AP College Football Writer Ralph Russo says a number of coaches are on the hot season even before the season begins. They include Nebraska's Scott Frost and Auburn's Bryan Harsin.
The World Cup in Qatar takes place from Nov. 20-Dec. 18. It's one of the most eagerly anticipated World Cups in memory as much for off-the-field reasons as those on it. It likely represents the last chance for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to win the tournament. Kylian Mbappé and France are back to defend their title. Brazil is bidding for a record-extending sixth title. The first World Cup in the Middle East will contain 32 teams and 64 matches across 28 days. Iran against the United States and Spain facing Germany are some of the group-stage matches to watch out for.
The Big Ten has announced its new, seven-year media rights deal with Fox, NBC and CBS that is believed to be the richest ever struck with a college sports conference. A person familiar with the contracts tells The Associated Press that the conference's soon-to-be 16 member universities eventually will share more than $1 billion in revenue per year. Starting in 2024, when USC and UCLA join the conference, Big Ten football Saturdays will be structured similar to the NFL. That means three marquee games being carried in consecutive time slots on three different major TV networks.
Harvard forward Matthew Coronato scored twice and the defending champion United States held off Sweden 3-2 on Sunday night to finish 4-0 in Group B play in the world junior hockey championship. Brett Berard also scored for the Americans and Kaidan Mbereko made 28 saves. The U.S. will face the Czech Republic — the fourth-place team in Group A — in the quarterfinals Wednesday. Sweden rallied in the third, with Emil Andrae cutting it to 3-1 with 9:22 to go and Ake Stakkestad making it a one-goal game on a power play with 1:45 left and Jesper Wallstedt off for an extra attacker. In Group A, Ralfs Bergmanis had a hat trick and Latvia beat the Czech Republic 5-2 to secure a quarterfinal spot.
Both defenses were feeling good about themselves after the first of two days of joint practices between the Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints before the teams face off in an exhibition game Friday. The frequent mistakes by Green Bay's offense had reigning MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers offering a reminder that the Packers must avoid repeating those errors now that the regular season is drawing closer. Green Bay’s defense shut down a Saints offense that featured Andy Dalton and Ian Book at quarterback with Jameis Winston sidelined by a sprained foot.
Jessica Korda made three eagles in an 11-under 61 Thursday that equaled a Ladies European Tour record and gave her a five-shot lead after the first round of the Aramco Team Series in Sotogrande, Spain. Korda also added six birdies to go with one bogey-on the par-4 eighth to break the course record at La Reserva Club and equal the lowest round in relation to par on the Ladies European Tour. The American was at 7 under after seven holes following eagles at the par-5 second and sixth holes. She added her third eagle on the 16th, also a par 5.
It appears Ralf Rangnick was correct when he made the blunt assessment that Manchester United needed soccer’s equivalent of “open-heart surgery” to fix the many issues afflicting England’s biggest club. Rangnick said that in April and he has since been replaced by Erik ten Hag as manager. It has taken just two painful Premier League games for Ten Hag to understand quite the mess he has joined. United has underperforming and in certain cases unmotivated players, an imbalanced squad, a faltering recruitment team unable to bring in its primary targets and American owners increasingly loathed by the fans. Ten Hag isn't helping himself with some questionable decision-making.
Nick Mullens completed 7 of 9 passes for 94 yards and one touchdown, and the Las Vegas Raiders beat the Minnesota Vikings 26-20 in a preseason game. The Raiders moved to 2-0 after a 27-11 win over Jacksonville last week in the Hall of Fame Game. Jarrett Stidham, who started at quarterback for Las Vegas, completed 10 of his 15 passes for 68 yards. He also ran for 16 yards on four carries, including a touchdown. Kellen Mond threw for 119 yards on nine completions, including two touchdowns, in the Vikings’ preseason opener. Sean Mannion finished 8 of 12 for 79 yards.
Two African players with Danish soccer club Viborg have been unable to enter Britain to face English team West Ham in a Europa Conference League playoff game. Viborg says entry visas couldn't be processed in time for Nigerian player Ibrahim Said and Gambian forward Alassana Jatta to play in London on Thursday. The problem wasn't solved despite the club working with embassies from Denmark and the Britain, UEFA and the Danish soccer federation. Viborg says visas to enter Britain take several weeks to process and the scheduled game was confirmed only last week.
